Markala Dam (Mali)

Weather…

The Markala Dam, officially known as the Barrage de Markala, is a monumental hydraulic engineering project located on the Niger River in Mali, about 35 kilometers northeast of Ségou. It was constructed by the French colonial administration between 1934 and 1947 to facilitate irrigation for the massive Office du Niger agricultural scheme. Spanning over 800 meters, the dam's primary function is to raise the water level of the Niger to redirect it into an extensive network of canals for the cultivation of rice, cotton, and sugarcane. At the time of its construction, it was the largest infrastructure project in French West Africa and involved the forced labor of thousands of West Africans, making it a site of complex historical memory. Architecturally, the dam is defined by its massive concrete piers and steel control gates. It remains the backbone of Malian agriculture in the Inland Niger Delta and is crucial for the nation's food security. The bridge atop the dam also provides a vital transport link between the northern and southern regions of the country.
