Layang-Layang, also known as Swallow Reef, is a coral atoll located about 300 kilometers northwest of Kota Kinabalu. It is a world-class diving destination, famous for its dramatic walls that drop vertically to depths of over 2,000 meters. The biggest draw for divers is the frequent sightings of schooling scalloped hammerhead sharks. Due to its remote oceanic location, the water clarity is exceptional and the coral reefs are in pristine condition. Access is limited to charter flights from Kota Kinabalu, and the island is only open during the diving season from March to August. Beyond its underwater wonders, Layang-Layang is a vital sanctuary for thousands of nesting migratory seabirds. There is only one resort on the island, catering specifically to dive enthusiasts. The presence of a Malaysian naval base ensures the protection of the reef and its surrounding waters, making it a safe haven for marine biodiversity.
