Tanjung Datu National Park Coast (Malaysia)

Weather…

Tanjung Datu National Park, located at the northwestern tip of Sarawak on the island of Borneo, is the state's smallest national park, covering just 14 square kilometers. Despite its size, it is renowned for its exceptional beauty, where steep, jungle-clad hills descend directly into pristine white sandy beaches and turquoise coral reefs. The park is a critical sanctuary for endangered sea turtles, particularly the Green and Hawksbill turtles, which return annually to its secluded shores to nest. Its rainforest interior is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including silvered leaf monkeys, bearded pigs, and several species of hornbills. Historically and geographically, Tanjung Datu marks the westernmost point of Sarawak and sits directly on the international border with Indonesia's West Kalimantan province. Accessible primarily by boat from the town of Sematan, the park provides a unique sense of isolation and tranquility, making it a premier destination for those seeking an untouched blend of marine and terrestrial wilderness.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The coast of Tanjung Datu National Park is mostly accessible via boat from Sematan or by a long jungle trekking trail. Boat trips are highly dependent on the current tide levels and sea conditions.
📅
Best season
The best time to visit is from April to September when the sea is calmer and visibility at the coral reefs is high. During the monsoon from November to February, boat travel is often too hazardous for tourists.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Visitors can expect a pristine coastline featuring fine sandy beaches, rocky headlands, and adjacent tropical rainforests. Coastal trails can be somewhat challenging due to roots and moist ground conditions.
🎒
What to bring
Snorkeling gear is a must for exploring the reefs, as are waterproof bags for the boat journey. Good hiking shoes for the jungle paths and plenty of drinking water are indispensable for every visitor.
🅿️
Parking
Parking spaces are available in Sematan before boarding the boat to the national park. There are both public parking areas and private options provided by some of the local tour operators.
⚠️
Safety
Be mindful of sea currents while snorkeling and avoid contact with sensitive corals or marine life. In the jungle areas, you should stay on the paths and pay close attention to orientation signs.
⏱️
Time needed
A day trip provides enough time for swimming and short hikes, but many visitors choose to stay overnight. To fully explore the more remote beaches, a stay of at least 2 days is highly recommended.
