Bintulu is a coastal town in central Sarawak, located at the mouth of the Kemena River along the South China Sea. Once a small fishing village, it rose to national importance in 1867 when it hosted the first meeting of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly, the oldest such body in Malaysia. The town underwent a massive transformation in the late 1970s following the discovery of offshore natural gas reserves, leading to the establishment of the Malaysia LNG complex. Today, Bintulu is one of the world's largest liquefied natural gas production sites and a major industrial hub for Sarawak. Its deep-water port, opened in 1983, facilitates the export of LNG, timber, and palm oil to international markets. Despite its heavy industrial focus, Bintulu gives natural attractions like the Similajau National Park, known for its unique golden sandy beaches and diverse coastal flora. The town's population is a multicultural mix, reflecting the migration of workers from across the state and the country. Bintulu continues to play a critical role in Malaysia's energy sector while developing its infrastructure to support a growing urban community.
