The resort's history began in the late 19th century when Norwegian missionaries and later French colonial officials discovered the health-promoting properties of the mineral-rich springs. The Ranomafana thermal bath was developed into a center for recreation, with the imposing Hotel des Thermes from 1922 still shaping the cityscape today. Geographically, the region is characterized by volcanic activity, which is responsible for heating the groundwater and the abundance of dissolved minerals. The thermal springs of Ranovisy also provide valuable mineral water distributed nationwide. In addition to the healing baths, Antsirabe is famous for its cooler climate and numerous colorful rickshaws, locally called pousse-pousse. This combination of historical architecture, wellness tradition, and spirited local culture makes the city a unique destination in the Malagasy highlands.
