Villa Vauban (Luxembourg)

Weather…

Villa Vauban, the art museum of the City of Luxembourg, is an elegant gem positioned in the tranquility of the municipal park. The original villa was built in 1873 by the wealthy leather manufacturer Gabriel Mayer on the foundations of the former Fort Vauban, part of the dismantled fortress. This explains its welcoming location on a slight elevation. The villa was later acquired by Baron and Baroness de La Fontaine and, through their generosity, came into the possession of the city, along with their significant art collection. In 2010, the historic villa was extended with a modern, copper-clad annex by architect Philippe Schmit. This extension created additional exhibition space and harmoniously combines the old with the new. The museum's collection focuses on 17th to 19th-century European painting, particularly Dutch and Flemish masters, as well as works by Luxembourgish artists. Villa Vauban thus has a unique combination of art, history, and nature in the middle of the city.
