Scheierbierg Nature Reserve (Wellenstein) (Luxembourg)

Weather…

The Scheierbierg Nature Reserve near Wellenstein comprises a diverse landscape of dry grasslands, hedgerows, and former quarries. Located on a prominent ridge above the Moselle, it is geologically characterized by Keuper layers, which often produce colorful marl soils. Botanically, the area is internationally renowned for its variety of wild orchids, such as the Lizard Orchid and the Military Orchid. Historical use for viticulture and quarrying has created a mosaic-like structure that today provides well-suited living conditions for numerous reptiles, such as the common wall lizard. During the summer months, Scheierbierg is a hotspot for insects, particularly rare species of grasshoppers and cicadas. The viewpoints offer a spectacular vista of the Moselle loop near Wellenstein. Preserving this area requires active management through sheep grazing to prevent the species-rich grasslands from becoming overgrown with scrub.
