Aspelt Castle (Luxembourg)

Weather…

Aspelt Castle, located in the south of Luxembourg, is a remarkable example of a Baroque residence built on the foundations of a medieval moated castle. The origins of the complex date back to the 11th century. Historically, the site is significant as the possible birthplace of Peter of Aspelt, the influential Archbishop of Mainz in the 14th century. The present castle was largely built around 1590 in the Renaissance style and was extensively remodelled in 1777 in the late Baroque style, which gives it its elegant, symmetrical appearance. After being owned by various noble families for centuries and gradually falling into disrepair, the castle was acquired by the state at the end of the 20th century and extensively restored. Today, the castle, classified as a national monument, is used for cultural events and houses foundations dedicated to the heritage of Peter of Aspelt. It is a shining example of the successful preservation of an important historical heritage.
