Theodul Chapel (Masescha) (Liechtenstein)

Weather…

The Theodul Chapel in Masescha, a hamlet above Triesenberg, is the oldest place of worship for the Walser people in the Principality of Liechtenstein. It was built around the year 1300, shortly after the settlement of Triesenberg by immigrants from the Valais (Wallis) region. The chapel is dedicated to Saint Theodul, the patron saint of the Walser and of Valais. The modest structure is characterized by its Romanesque core and later Gothic alterations, while the interior features a devotional atmosphere enhanced by precious 15th-century wall paintings. For centuries, Masescha served as the religious hub for the scattered Walser families before Triesenberg established its own parish church. Situated at an altitude of approximately 1,240 meters, the chapel overlooks the Rhine Valley with striking views. Today, it stands as a significant historical monument, symbolizing the deep-seated roots of Walser culture and tradition in Liechtenstein.
