St. Florin Chapel (Liechtenstein)

Weather…

The current St. Florin Cathedral in Vaduz stands on the foundations of a much older chapel, with origins dating back to the Middle Ages. This original Florin Chapel was mentioned in documents as early as the 14th century and was dedicated to Saint Florinus of Remüs. For centuries, it served as the spiritual center of Vaduz before the population growth in the 19th century necessitated the construction of a larger church. The present Neo-Gothic building was constructed between 1869 and 1873 by architect Friedrich von Schmidt on the same site, with the historic chapel being either integrated or replaced. Archaeological investigations around the church confirm the long religious continuity of this location in the heart of the capital. The chapel was not only a sacred space but also a social gathering point for the citizens of Vaduz across many generations. Today, the cathedral's crypt serves as a reminder of the parish's deep historical roots. The naming after St. Florin traditionally connects Vaduz with the Rhaetian cultural sphere.
