Gbi Forest Reserve

Weather…
Water temperature…
Gbi Forest Reserve in western Liberia, established in 1966, covers 1,100 km² of moist evergreen and semi-deciduous rainforest. It is part of the Upper Guinean forest ecosystem and hosts significant populations of forest elephants, western chimpanzees, and yellow-backed duikers. The reserve's canopy reaches 40 m, with emergents like the giant cylicodiscus (Cylicodiscus gabunensis). Threats include encroachment by rubber plantations and artisanal diamond mining along the Mano River. In 2011, a logging concession was granted in the reserve's buffer zone, sparking protests. Community-led patrols have reduced poaching by 30% since 2015. The reserve is a priority site for the Liberia Conservation Action Plan.
