Masitise Cave House (Lesotho)

Weather…

Built in 1867 by the Swiss missionary David Ellenberger, the Masitise Cave House is a remarkable architectural feat that blends European lifestyle with Lesotho's rugged landscape. Ellenberger utilized a massive sandstone overhang as a natural roof, constructing stone walls underneath to create a multi-room dwelling for his family. This stable temperature environment served them for over 50 years. Now converted into a small museum, it houses an eclectic collection of missionary artifacts, traditional Basotho crafts, and historical records. Visitors are often surprised to find a genuine dinosaur footprint embedded in the ceiling of one of the rooms, a testament to the region's ancient geological history. The surrounding gardens, originally planted by Ellenberger, still contain fruit trees that he introduced to the Quthing area.
