Highlights of 2026

Strenči is a welcoming small town in northern Latvia, picturesquely situated on the banks of the Gauja River. The town is primarily known as the „capital of timber rafters,” as the transport of wood along the river was historically the main source of income for its residents. Every year in May, the international Timber Raftsmen Festival is held here to keep this ancient tradition alive. Another prominent feature of the town is the Strenči Psychiatric Hospital, which opened in 1907 and is one of the largest and most architecturally significant institutions of its kind in the Baltics. The Art Nouveau clinic buildings continue to shape the town's architectural landscape today. The surroundings of Strenči are characterized by dense forests and pristine nature, making the town a handy starting point for nature observation and canoeing trips. Due to its proximity to the Estonian border, Strenči also holds cross-border significance in regional exchanges.
