Kristapils Hillfort (Kristapils pilskalns) is a significant archaeological and geomorphological monument in the Sēlija (Selonia) region. This natural elevation was modified and strategically used by ancient Baltic tribes, particularly the Selonians, as a fortified settlement. The hill's steep slopes provided natural defense against invaders and allowed for the monitoring of surrounding trade routes and river valleys. Geologically, the mound is part of the Augstzeme Highland and was formed by morainic deposits during the last glaciation. Archaeological excavations have revealed layers dating from the Iron Age to the early Middle Ages, indicating a long period of continuous habitation. The site is closely associated with local legends about the giant Kristaps, lending it high cultural importance. Today, the hillfort is surrounded by dense forest, yet the terraced levels and artificial embankments of the former fortifications remain clearly visible. Preserving this site is vital for both Latvian identity and the study of Baltic settlement history.
