Lake Lubāns, with an area of about 80 square kilometers, is the largest lake in Latvia. It is located in the eastern part of the country, on the border between the Vidzeme and Latgale regions. The lake is shallow and surrounded by vast marshlands and peat bogs, forming the Lubāns wetland complex, an internationally significant RAMSAR site. For nature lovers, the lake is an absolute highlight, as over 225 bird species have been recorded here. Several observation towers around the lake allow visitors to spot rare species like the white-tailed eagle or various waterfowl. An information center provides guided tours and equipment rentals. Also worth visiting is the nearby Teirumnieki bog trail, which leads through untouched nature on wooden boardwalks. Fishing plays a major role at Lake Lubāns; visitors can purchase locally caught and smoked fish directly from the fishermen. The region is sparsely populated and provides impressive silence. The best time to visit the lake is during the autumn or spring bird migration, when thousands of animals rest here.
