Phongsaly is the northernmost provincial capital of Laos and sits at roughly 1,430 metres above sea level in a remote mountain area close to the border with the Chinese province of Yunnan. The town is known for its cool climate, frequent morning fog, cobbled hillside lanes, wooden houses and a visible Chinese architectural influence rooted in centuries of trade with Yunnan. Phongsaly Province is one of the most ethnically diverse regions in Southeast Asia; official sources record 28 different ethnic groups, including Akha, Phounoy, Tai Lue and Khmu, each retaining its own language, dress and customs. A major part of the local economy revolves around growing high-quality tea, including very old tea trees that produce a renowned premium leaf.
