Wat Mai (Laos)

Weather…

Wat Mai Suwannaphumaham, commonly known as Wat Mai (the 'New Monastery'), is one of the largest and most ornate temples in Luang Prabang. Founded in the late 18th century by King Anurat, it served as a private chapel for the royal family and the residence of the highest-ranking Buddhist monk in Laos. The temple is renowned for its magnificent five-tiered roof, which gracefully descends toward the ground in the classic Luang Prabang style. Its most striking feature is the front veranda, covered in intricate golden bas-reliefs added in the 1960s. These panels depict scenes from the Ramayana, the birth of Buddha, and vignettes of traditional Lao village life. During the Lao New Year (Pi Mai), the temple takes center stage as it becomes the temporary home of the Phra Bang Buddha image for ritual cleansing. The interior is equally impressive, characterized by red-lacquered pillars adorned with gold leaf and a large, serene golden Buddha at the main altar.
