Boun Neua, also written Bun Neua, is a district town in Phongsaly Province in the very north of Laos, several hours' drive northwest of the provincial capital Phongsaly. The town sits at around 1,300 metres above sea level in an upland zone of mountains, dense forests and small valleys that ranks among the climatically coolest parts of the country. It serves as the administrative seat of the district of the same name and as a junction for several mountain roads leading toward the Chinese border, toward Phongsaly and into the neighbouring districts of Yot Ou and May. The economy is dominated by rice, maize and tea, complemented by growing plantations of rubber, walnuts and sugarcane, often run jointly with Chinese investors. The town has modest markets.
