Tegerek-Saz Petroglyphs (Kyrgyzstan)

Weather…

The Tegerek-Saz Petroglyphs are located in the foothills of the Kungey Alatau mountains, near the northern shores of Lake Issyk-Kul. This significant archaeological site features a fascinating collection of rock carvings dating primarily from the Iron Age, showcasing the distinct artistic style of early nomadic tribes, particularly the Sakas. The engravings depict a variety of motifs, most notably ibexes with grand curved horns, deer, wolves, and dynamic hunting scenes, as well as riders that emphasize the central role of horses in nomadic life. These petroglyphs were pecked or incised into the dark 'desert varnish' of the rocks using stone or metal tools. Thanks to the high-altitude location and dry climate, many of these ancient works have remained remarkably well-preserved over the centuries. For visitors and historians alike, the site serves as an open-air gallery, offering profound insights into the spiritual beliefs, social organization, and daily survival of the ancient Central Asian peoples.
