Haller Park, frequently referred to as Heller Garden, is an ecological marvel located in Bamburi, north of Mombasa. The park was created from the vision of Swiss naturalist Dr. René Haller, who in 1971 began rehabilitating a desolate limestone quarry owned by the Bamburi Portland Cement Company. Through meticulous soil restoration, the planting of nitrogen-fixing Casuarina trees, and the introduction of millipedes to generate humus, Haller transformed the barren wasteland into a lush forest ecosystem. Today, the park is home to a diverse array of wildlife, including giraffes, hippos, buffaloes, and antelopes. It gained international fame for the unique bond between Owen, an orphaned baby hippo, and Mzee, a century-old giant tortoise. Visitors can witness animal feedings, visit a crocodile farm, and explore integrated fish farming systems. Haller Park stands as a globally recognized success story in industrial site reclamation, demonstrating how human ingenuity can successfully restore lost natural habitats.
