Ruiru is a rapidly growing industrial town near Nairobi in Kiambu County and is one of the fastest-expanding urban areas in Kenya. Geographically, the town is located just about 25 kilometers northeast of the capital and is excellently connected to the national transport network via the Thika Superhighway. Originally a center for coffee plantations, Ruiru has transformed in recent decades into a significant industrial hub for the production of food, construction materials, and textiles. The town serves as an important residential and commuter hub for people working in Nairobi, leading to a massive construction boom in residential estates and commercial spaces. Significant educational institutions in the area include the Ruiru campus of Kenyatta University and Zetech University, which support the local youth. The population has surged in recent years due to urbanization and the establishment of new industries within the Tatu City project. Despite rapid modernization, the town preserves parts of its agricultural heritage through small-scale farms and local markets that supply the growing population.
