Ascension Cathedral (Kazakhstan)

Weather…

The Ascension Cathedral, also known as Zenkov Cathedral, is a jewel in Almaty's Panfilov Park. This impressive Russian Orthodox church was built entirely of wood and almost without nails. Its colorful facade with its golden domes is a masterpiece of wooden architecture. Completed in 1907, it miraculously survived the severe earthquake of 1911, which many believers considered a divine intervention. At 56 meters high, it was once one of the tallest wooden buildings in the world. During the Soviet era, the cathedral was repurposed as a museum and concert hall before being returned to the Russian Orthodox Church in 1995. Today, it serves again as an active house of worship and is one of Almaty's most popular tourist attractions, admired for its unique construction and spiritual atmosphere.
