Terracina is a historic city located on the Tyrrhenian coast at the southern edge of the Pontine Plain, offering a unique blend of ancient ruins and seaside charm. Originally a Volscian stronghold known as Anxur, it became a crucial Roman colony due to its strategic position along the Via Appia. The city's most recognizable landmark is the Temple of Jupiter Anxur, a monumental Roman sanctuary dating from the 1st century BC, perched atop Mount Sant'Angelo with commanding views over the Gulf of Gaeta. The ancient Via Appia passed directly through the heart of the city, and original basalt paving stones can still be seen in the Forum Emiliano, the modern-day Piazza del Municipio. The Cathedral of San Cesareo, built over the remains of a Roman temple to Augustus, features exquisite Cosmatesque mosaic floors and a striking Romanesque bell tower. A remarkable feat of Roman engineering is the Pisco Montano, a massive limestone cliff cut down by 38 meters during Emperor Trajan's reign to facilitate the passage of the coastal road. Today, Terracina serves as a popular beach resort and a primary gateway for ferries to the Pontine Islands. The city is a vital agricultural and tourism center within the province of Latina.
