Circeo National Park (Italy)

Weather…

Circeo National Park, located on the coast of the Lazio region, was established in 1934 to preserve a portion of the former Pontine Marshes from total reclamation. It is one of Italy's oldest national parks, distinguished by an extraordinary variety of ecosystems within a relatively small area. The protected territory includes the striking limestone massif of Mount Circeo, mythologically known as the home of the sorceress Circe, as well as extensive coastal dunes and four saltwater lagoons. A vital part of the park is the 'Selva di Circe,' one of the last remaining lowland forests in Italy, providing a habitat for wild boars and fallow deer. The uninhabited island of Zannone is also part of the park, serving as a crucial stopover for migratory birds. Due to its ecological significance, the park is recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In addition to its natural beauty, the area contains significant archaeological sites, including Roman villas and prehistoric caves. Today, the park is a popular destination for hikers, birdwatchers, and nature enthusiasts.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Located about 100 km south of Rome, the park is easily reached via the Via Pontina road, with Sabaudia serving as a main hub for accessing the forest and coastal dunes.
📅
Best season
The best time to visit is from spring to late autumn, when conditions are well-suited for forest hikes, exploring the dunes, or canoeing on the park's scenic coastal lagoon.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is highly diverse, featuring flat wetlands, a large lagoon, high coastal dunes, and the forested limestone promontory of Monte Circeo rising above the sea.
🎒
What to bring
Lightweight hiking shoes for forest trails, binoculars for birdwatching in the wetlands, and insect repellent for areas near the lagoon are essential items for any visitor.
🅿️
Parking
Several parking areas are located near the beaches of Sabaudia and the visitor centers, though they can fill up very quickly on sunny weekends during the summer season.
⚠️
Safety
Visitors should stay on the designated wooden boardwalks in the dune areas and wear sturdy boots for climbing Monte Circeo, as the paths there are rocky and steep.
⏱️
Time needed
One full day is enough to see the various ecosystems, but for a more in-depth exploration of both the mountain and the lagoon area, two days would be much better.
