Abbey of Fossanova (Italy)

Weather…

The Abbey of Fossanova in the province of Latina is the oldest example of Cistercian Gothic architecture in Italy. Established in the late 12th century on the ruins of a former Benedictine monastery and an ancient Roman villa, it was officially consecrated in 1208 by Pope Innocent III. The architecture is characterized by its strict simplicity and geometric clarity, reflecting the ascetic ideals of the Cistercian Order. The complex features a magnificent church, a well-preserved cloister with delicate twin columns, and an impressive chapter house. A significant historical event occurred here in 1274, when Saint Thomas Aquinas died in the abbey while on his way to the Second Council of Lyon. The entire monastic village, including the infirmary and the guest house, provides an authentic glimpse into medieval monastic life. Today, Fossanova remains an active religious site and a major cultural monument, often hosting classical music festivals and academic seminars.
