💡 Tips

  • The famous 'Spiagge Bianche' get their color from a chemical plant's limestone discharge; many prefer to enjoy the visuals but swim elsewhere.
  • Parking near the White Beaches gets extremely crowded; arrive before 9 AM or take the convenient train.
  • Make sure to bring an umbrella, as the stark white sand reflects the sun intensely and there is no natural shade.
  • Local buses are a very reliable and cheap option for commuting between the beaches and the town center.

Rosignano Solvay is a distinct coastal town situated in the Livorno province of Tuscany, Italy. Built in the early 20th century around the Solvay chemical plant, the town features unique, orderly brick architecture that contrasts with typical Tuscan medieval villages. It serves as a bustling residential and industrial hub, but its international fame is entirely tied to its spectacular coastline. The combination of its industrial history and impressive seaside geography creates an intriguing, somewhat surreal atmosphere for visitors exploring this stretch of the Etruscan Coast. The most famous attraction here is undoubtedly the Spiagge Bianche (White Beaches). This remarkable stretch of coastline features blindingly white sand and spirited, Caribbean-like turquoise waters. While incredibly beautiful and a massive draw for summer tourists, the unique color is historically a result of limestone and calcium chloride emissions from the nearby soda ash plant. Despite this, the waters are strictly monitored and remain extremely popular for swimming, sunbathing, and kitesurfing. The expansive beach provides both free sections and areas equipped with umbrellas and sunbeds. Beyond the striking beaches, Rosignano Solvay features a pleasant promenade, Marina Cala de' Medici, which is packed with luxury yachts, boutique shops, and excellent seafood restaurants. Visitors can indulge in delicious Tuscan maritime cuisine, including cacciucco (fish stew) and fresh local wines. The town is easily accessible by train on the Pisa-Rome line, making it a convenient, albeit unconventional, and unforgettable stop for anyone touring the Italian coast.
