Bolgheri Nature Reserve (Italy)

Weather…

The Bolgheri Nature Reserve (Oasi di Bolgheri) is located in the province of Livorno, Tuscany, and holds a special place as a pioneer of Italian conservation. It was the first private nature reserve in Italy, established in 1959 by Marquis Mario Incisa della Rocchetta to save the last remnants of the Maremma marshes from land reclamation. Today, the sanctuary covers approximately 513 hectares and features a mosaic of coastal dunes, pine forests, ponds, and seasonally flooded meadows. Since 1977, it has been recognized as a wetland of international importance under the Ramsar Convention. The reserve serves as a critical refuge for various waterfowl, including herons, ducks, and rare migratory species such as the osprey. The flora consists of typical Mediterranean scrub and extensive reed beds that provide essential cover for wildlife. Due to strict management and limited human access, Bolgheri has maintained an ecological balance that serves as a model for conservation along the Tyrrhenian coast.
