Savona is a major port city on the Italian Riviera in Liguria, boasting a deep maritime heritage. During the Middle Ages, it was a fierce rival of Genoa, a competition that led to numerous conflicts and the eventual subjugation of the city. A dominant landmark is the Priamar Fortress, constructed by the Genoese in 1542 to maintain control over the port. Savona is often called the "City of Popes" because it was the birthplace of the Della Rovere family, which produced Popes Sixtus IV and Julius II. Remarkably, Savona is home to the only other Sistine Chapel in the world besides the one in the Vatican, commissioned by Sixtus IV as a burial site for his parents. Today, the city is a vital Mediterranean cruise hub, featuring the modern Palacrociere terminal. Its historic center preserves notable monuments such as the Leon Pancaldo Tower and the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta.
