Murge Plateau (Italy)

Weather…

The Murge Plateau is an expansive limestone highland in the Apulia region of Southeast Italy, covering roughly 4000 square kilometers. Its geology is defined by karst topography, featuring numerous caves, sinkholes, and deep ravines known locally as 'gravine' that carve through the soft rock. Despite its arid appearance, the plateau has been cultivated for millennia, producing olives, almonds, and renowned wines. The region is culturally significant for its unique architectural heritage, including the conical-roofed 'trulli' of Alberobello and the mysterious octagonal Castel del Monte, both UNESCO World Heritage sites. The name 'Murge' comes from the Latin word for a sharp stone, reflecting the rugged, rocky surface of the land. Today, the Alta Murgia National Park protects much of the area, preserving its rare Mediterranean steppe environment and traditional pastoral landscapes. The plateau remains a vital link between the Adriatic coast and the interior of the Italian peninsula.
