Castel del Monte is a 13th-century citadel and castle situated on a hill in Andria in the Apulia region of southeast Italy. It was built during the 1240s by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. The castle is famed for its unique octagonal shape, with an octagonal tower at each corner. The mathematical and astronomical precision of its layout, which features a blend of Northern European Cistercian Gothic, classical antiquity, and Islamic elements, has led to numerous debates about its purpose. While nominally a fortress, it lacks typical military features like a moat or drawbridge. Scholars have speculated it may have served as a hunting lodge, an observatory, or a grand venue for the imperial court. The castle was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996, lauded for the perfection of its form and the harmonious blending of cultural elements from Northern Europe, the Muslim world, and classical antiquity. It is so iconic that it is depicted on the Italian-issue one-cent Euro coin.
