Ceccano is a historic town in the Sacco Valley, within the province of Frosinone, with origins reaching back to the pre-Roman Volscian era. Known in antiquity as Fabrateria Vetus, the settlement developed into a strategic defensive point due to its hilltop location. During the Middle Ages, it became the seat of the powerful Counts of Ceccano, who exerted significant political influence within the Papal States during the 12th and 13th centuries. The city's most prominent landmark is the Castello dei Conti, a medieval fortress that overlooks the town and has undergone various structural evolutions over the centuries. Ceccano suffered extensive damage during World War II bombings because of its proximity to German defensive lines but was meticulously rebuilt in the post-war years. Today, the local economy is characterized by a blend of agriculture and industrial activity in the surrounding valley. The Abbey of San Nicola stands as a primary example of the region's historical religious architecture.
