Salina is the emerald-green heart of the Aeolian archipelago, standing out from its more arid neighbors. The island is formed by two extinct volcanoes, Monte Fossa delle Felci and Monte dei Porri, which gave it the ancient name 'Didyme' (the twins). Salina is an agricultural center; it produces Italy's best capers and Malvasia grapes, used for the famous 'Malvasia delle Lipari' dessert wine. A highlight for film fans is Pollara, a natural rock amphitheater where scenes from the movie 'The Postman' (Il Postino) were filmed. Unlike Lipari or Panarea, Salina has a quieter, nature-oriented atmosphere. There are three municipalities: Santa Marina, Malfa, and Leni, each with its own charm. Beaches like Lingua are often pebbly but captivate with deep blue water. In Lingua, one must try 'Pane Cunzato' at Alfredo's. The island is handy for hikers wishing to explore trails through dense fern forests to the volcanic peaks. Salina is accessible by ferry from Milazzo, Messina, or Naples and provides an excellent blend of indulgence, nature, and relaxation.
