Lipari is the animated heart of the Aeolian Islands and serves as the excellent base for exploring the volcanic archipelago off the coast of Sicily. The main town is dominated by a massive fortress rock, the Castello, built upon ancient Greek and Roman foundations. Within its walls lies the Aeolian Archaeological Museum, which houses one of the Mediterranean's most significant collections of prehistoric artifacts, including a unique array of ancient Greek theater masks. Lipari is also renowned for its geological wealth; for centuries, the island was a center for obsidian and pumice mining, giving the northern landscape its characteristic white appearance. The lively harbors of Marina Lunga and Marina Corta are lined with cafes and restaurants serving local specialties like capers and Malvasia wine. Despite its popularity, the island's interior and higher villages like Quattropani offer rural tranquility and spectacular views of the neighboring islands Salina, Vulcano, and Stromboli.
