Noto (Italy)

Weather…

Noto was completely replanned after the devastating earthquake of 1693 and rebuilt a few kilometers away from the old city, Noto Antica. Architects created a good Baroque city with wide, straight streets and magnificent squares. Corso Vittorio Emanuele is the main artery, lined with palaces and churches. The Cathedral of San Nicolò, which was painstakingly restored after the collapse of its dome in 1996, towers over the city and glows in a warm gold tone at sunset. Palazzo Nicolaci di Villadorata is famous for its artistically decorated balconies with grotesque figures. Every year in May, the 'Infiorata di Noto' festival takes place, where Via Nicolaci is covered with elaborate flower paintings. Noto is also a gateway to the Vendicari Nature Reserve with its pristine beaches and flamingos. The city features excellent gastronomy, with almond granita and almond pastries being local specialties. Noto is about 35 kilometers from Syracuse and is best explored on foot to admire the details of the stonework at leisure.
