Gubbio (Italy)

Weather…

Gubbio, located at the base of Mount Ingino in Umbria, is one of Italy's most remarkably intact medieval towns. Built predominantly from grey limestone, its somber yet elegant streets feel like a step back in time. The heart of the city is the Piazza Grande, a vast 'hanging square' supported by massive arches, dominated by the 14th-century Palazzo dei Consoli. This palace houses the famous Eugubine Tablets, seven bronze plaques that are the most important records of the ancient Umbrian language. Visitors should take the unique birdcage-like cable car to the summit of Mount Ingino to visit the Basilica of San Ubaldo and enjoy panoramic views of the Apennines. Gubbio is also celebrated for its long-standing tradition of ceramics and its well-preserved Roman Theatre. Every May 15th, the town hosts the 'Corsa dei Ceri' (Race of the Candles), an ancient and intense festival where three giant wooden structures are carried at a run through the steep medieval streets. Local cuisine is rich with white truffles, wild boar, and local cheeses. A quirky tradition involves the Fontana dei Matti (Fountain of the Madmen); those who run around it three times can earn a symbolic 'Madman's License.' Gubbio is best reached by car or by bus from Perugia. In December, the town gains global attention for the 'World's Largest Christmas Tree,' a light installation that covers the entire slope of Mount Ingino.
