Grado is situated on an island between the open sea and a vast, labyrinthine lagoon. Once the maritime port for ancient Aquileia, the town preserves its historical allure in its old center, characterized by narrow calli and the early Christian basilicas of Sant'Eufemia and Santa Maria delle Grazie. Its south-facing sandy beaches have earned it the title 'Isle of the Sun'. Beyond beach life, Grado is famous for its marine thermal baths and the unique natural scenery of the lagoon, which can be explored by boat to see the 'Casoni', traditional reed-roofed fishermen's huts. The culinary centerpiece is 'Boreto alla Graisana', a traditional peppery fish stew. Connected to the mainland by a scenic causeway, the island is easily accessible while maintaining its distinct maritime atmosphere.
