💡 Tips

  • To avoid the crowds and get the best photos of the colourful houses, visit the old town early in the morning or late in the evening.
  • Take a walk along the 'Scogliera Viva', a seaside promenade with sculptures carved into the rocks. It's especially beautiful at sunset.
  • Take a boat trip into the lagoon to see the 'casoni', the old thatched fishermen's huts. It's a unique insight into the area's history.
  • Parking in the centre is difficult in summer. Use the larger paid car parks on the outskirts and enjoy the short walk into the centre.
  • The Cathedral's cylindrical bell tower is a landmark of the town. Although you can't climb it, it's a fantastic photo subject from the old town's alleyways.

Early Morning Walk

Experience the town at its most peaceful by taking a stroll along the Levante or Ponente beaches at sunrise.

Caorle, often referred to as 'Little Venice', is a historic fishing port that has retained its authentic character. The town center is a maze of pastel-colored houses and narrow Venetian-style alleys. Its most defining landmark is the Cathedral of Santo Stefano with its unique 11th-century cylindrical bell tower, one of the few of its kind in the world. The town is flanked by two excellent sandy beaches: Levante and Ponente. A unique feature of the coastline is the 'Scogliera Viva' (Living Reef), where sculptors from around the globe have carved artwork into the limestone sea wall. This path leads to the Sanctuary of Madonna dell'Angelo, a beautiful church sitting right at the water's edge. Beyond the beaches lies the Caorle Lagoon, home to traditional 'casoni' (reed huts) that once inspired Ernest Hemingway. Visitors should indulge in the local seafood, particularly the 'moscardini' (baby octopus). Located between Venice and Trieste, it is easily accessible by car or via the nearby Portogruaro train station.
