Shahdad (Iran)

Weather…

Shahdad serves as the primary entry point to the UNESCO-listed Lut Desert, one of the hottest places on Earth. Its main draw is the 'Kaluts' or yardangs, spectacular geological structures that resemble an ancient, abandoned ghost city rising from the sand. These formations were carved over millennia by wind and water erosion, creating a landscape that glows with magical hues during sunrise and sunset. Beyond the Kaluts, Shahdad has historical caravanserais and unique Nebkhas (desert dunes formed around shrubs). Visitors flock here for the desert's profound silence and world-class stargazing opportunities. The best time to visit is from October to April, as summer temperatures can be extreme. Kerman city is about a 1.5-hour drive away. Local guides are highly recommended for deep desert treks. Local dates are a regional culinary highlight.
