Hólar í Hjaltadal (Iceland)

Weather…

Hólar í Hjaltadal is one of northern Iceland's most storied historical sites, serving for centuries as the intellectual counterpart to Skálholt in the south. Established in 1106 by Jón Ögmundsson, the bishopric rapidly evolved into a major center for education and publishing. It was the site of Iceland's first printing press, which produced the renowned Guðbrandur Bible in 1584, the first complete translation of the Bible into Icelandic. Hólar maintained its status as an independent episcopal seat until 1798 and was a stronghold of resistance during the Reformation, led by Bishop Jón Arason. The present cathedral, constructed from red sandstone in 1763, is the oldest stone church in Iceland and houses significant ecclesiastical treasures. Today, Hólar is not only a historical landmark but also home to a university specializing in equine science and tourism, preserving its long-standing educational legacy.
