Hofsós is one of Iceland's oldest trading sites, located on the eastern side of Skagafjörður in the north of the country. Its history as an official trading post dates back to the 16th century when the Danish King established a trade monopoly in the region. One of its most significant historical structures is 'Pakkhúsið', a well-preserved timber warehouse built in 1777 during the height of the Danish trade monopoly. Today, Hofsós is best known for the Icelandic Emigration Center (Vesturfarasetrið), which meticulously documents the history of Icelanders who migrated to North America in the late 19th century. A modern architectural masterpiece in the village is the local swimming pool, situated on the coastline and designed by the same architect as the Blue Lagoon, offering impressive views of Drangey Island. The local geology features the magnificent Staðarbjörg basalt columns that rise directly from the sea. Hofsós uniquely merges historical depth with contemporary design and dramatic natural surroundings.
