Drangey is a prominent island located in the middle of Skagafjörður in Northern Iceland, representing the remnant of a 700,000-year-old extinct volcano. Its nearly vertical cliffs rise to a height of 180 meters, providing handy nesting grounds for millions of seabirds, including Atlantic puffins, guillemots, and gannets. Historically, the island is inseparable from the Saga of Grettir the Strong, as the famous outlaw spent his final years in exile here. Despite its rugged accessibility, the island once served as a vital pantry for local residents who climbed the cliffs to collect eggs and hunt birds. Today, Drangey is a protected sanctuary accessible only by boat, with guided tours leading visitors up steep paths to the grassy summit. Geologically, the island consists mainly of basaltic tuff, sculpted by erosion into its current fortress-like appearance. Best season
The best time for birdwatching on Drangey is from June to August, when the colonies are in full breeding activity. During these months, puffins and guillemots are massed on the cliffs in huge numbers.
Best time of day
Early morning and late afternoon are good when the birds are most actively flying to and from the cliffs. Around midday many species rest, making watching less rewarding.
Etiquette
Always keep a respectful distance from the breeding colonies and stay on marked paths. Feeding the birds is strictly prohibited, and loud noises should be avoided to prevent disturbance.
What to bring
A good pair of binoculars and a camera with a telephoto lens are essential for watching the birds from a safe distance. Sturdy waterproof hiking boots and warm clothing are recommended due to the harsh weather.
Getting there
Drangey is only accessible by boat; regular tours are offered from Skagafjörður, especially in the summer months. The landing is small and the climb up to the plateau is steep, so a good level of fitness is required.
What to expect
Although the birds are numerous, they can be shy and will quickly dive off the cliffs if you move abruptly. Allow plenty of time and sit quietly at a viewpoint to watch the colony in action.
