Kirkjufell, or 'Church Mountain,' is the hallmark of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula and is widely considered one of the most beautiful mountains in the world. Its symmetrical, pointed peak rises 463 meters above sea level right next to the town of Grundarfjörður. It gained global fame as a filming location for 'Game of Thrones,' where it was depicted as 'Arrowhead Mountain.' The classic photography spot features the nearby Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall in the foreground, creating an excellent balance with the peak. Visitors can walk a trail around the base, but climbing to the top is strictly for experienced climbers with a guide due to steep and dangerous slopes. The area has great whale-watching opportunities in winter and hiking in summer. In Grundarfjörður, travelers can find cozy spots serving fresh local seafood. The drive from Reykjavík takes about 2.5 hours via Route 54. Kirkjufell is remarkable in every season: winter brings the magic of the Northern Lights over its summit, while summer showcases the mountain in lush green surroundings.
