Fáskrúðsfjörður is a scenic town in the East Fjords of Iceland, distinguished by its unique historical connection to France. During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the fjord served as the primary base for French fishermen operating in the productive waters surrounding Iceland. This heritage remains evident today through bilingual street signs in both Icelandic and French. One of the most significant landmarks is the beautifully restored French Hospital, which now operates as a hotel and museum documenting the grueling conditions faced by the sailors. The town is located at the head of a deep fjord, surrounded by majestic peaks such as Holmatindur. Today, the local economy is driven by modern fish processing facilities and growing tourism. Every July, the community hosts the "Franskir dagar" (French Days) festival to celebrate these enduring historical ties. Since the completion of the Fáskrúðsfjarðargöng tunnel, the town has enjoyed improved accessibility to Iceland’s main Ring Road network.
