Þingvellir (Iceland)

Weather…

Þingvellir is Iceland's most significant historical site and a potent symbol of national identity. It was here in 930 AD that the Alþingi, one of the world's oldest surviving parliaments, was established, where early Icelanders gathered annually to enact laws and adjudicate disputes. Geographically, the site is equally remarkable, as it lies directly in the rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates, evidenced by massive fissures such as Almannagjá. Þingvellir remained the seat of parliamentary sessions until 1798, after which the institution was relocated to Reykjavík. In 1944, the formal declaration of the Republic of Iceland took place here, cementing the location as the spiritual heart of the nation. Since 2004, Þingvellir has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site for its profound cultural heritage and unique geological setting on the shores of Lake Þingvallavatn.
