Þvottá (Iceland)

Weather…

Þvottá is a historic farm located in Álftafjörður in Eastern Iceland, which played a pivotal role in the Christianization of the country. The name of the site literally means 'Wash River' and refers to a landmark event that took place in 999 AD. At that time, the missionary Þangbrandur baptized the influential chieftain Hallur Þorsteinsson, known as Hallur á Síðu, and his entire household in the nearby river. According to tradition, they chose a warm spring instead of the cold river water for the ceremony, which defined the name of the location and the stream. This event marked a turning point, as Hallur was one of the first powerful leaders to embrace the new faith, paving the way for the official adoption of Christianity at the Alþingi in 1000 AD. Today, a monument commemorates this historic baptism and the significance of Þvottá in Iceland's religious heritage. The landscape surrounding the farm is characterized by rugged mountains and the expansive coastline of the East Fjords. Visitors find a place of serenity that captures the atmosphere of the Viking Age and the transition to a new era in Icelandic culture.
