Hengifoss (Iceland)

Weather…

Hengifoss is the third highest waterfall in Iceland, with a vertical drop of 128 meters, located in East Iceland near the town of Egilsstaðir. The waterfall is most famous for the striking geological layers in the cliff face behind it, where dark basalt layers are separated by thin, bright red bands of sedimentary clay. These red layers were formed millions of years ago when soil and organic matter were trapped between successive lava flows during the Tertiary period. The hike to the waterfall takes about an hour and passes by another notable waterfall, Litlanesfoss, which is framed by spectacular hexagonal basalt columns. Hengifoss flows into a deep gorge that eventually leads to the Lagarfljót lake, a body of water shrouded in local folklore regarding a legendary lake monster.
