Borgarfjörður Eystri is a small, photogenic village with a population of around 100, tucked away among dramatic mountains. It is widely regarded as the best place in Iceland to see puffins; the Hafnarhólmi marina features viewing platforms that allow visitors to observe thousands of these birds at close range from May to August. The village is also steeped in folklore, with the hill Álfaborg (The Elf Castle) said to be the residence of the Icelandic elf queen, making it a focal point for local legends. The area is a premier hiking destination, offering over 27 marked trails. The most famous is the hike to Stórurð, an area of massive boulders and turquoise ponds set against the jagged Dyrfjöll mountains. In town, you can visit the local church to see an altar painting by the famous artist Jóhannes Kjarval, who grew up in the area. Despite its remote location, the village hosts the popular Bræðslan music festival each summer, drawing crowds to an old fish factory for intimate concerts.
