Stokksnes is one of Iceland's most photographed locations, famous for the striking Vestrahorn mountain that rises 454 meters steeply from the North Atlantic. The flat, wet sand beaches create excellent reflections of the jagged peaks during calm weather, making the area a paradise for landscape photographers. The black dunes are dotted with yellow dune grass, providing a sharp contrast to the dark mountain backdrop. Historically, Stokksnes served as an important base for the British Army during World War II, and today it houses a NATO radar station. Nearby, an artificial Viking village was built for a movie set, which remains open for visitors to explore. It has a glimpse into how Saga-era settlements might have looked, even though it was never actually inhabited. The best time to visit is late afternoon or early morning when the light accentuates the textures of the mountain. Access is via a private road at the Viking Café, where a small entrance fee is required. The area is located about 20 minutes east of Höfn and is easily reachable from the Ring Road. In Höfn, be sure to try the local langoustine, a culinary specialty of the region.
