Csesznek Castle (Hungary)

Weather…

Csesznek Castle is one of Hungary's most scenic medieval fortress ruins, perched on a steep limestone cliff in the heart of the Bakony Mountains. It was constructed around 1263 by Baron Jakab Cseszneky as part of the royal defense network established after the Mongol invasion. In the 14th century, the castle came into the possession of the powerful Garai family, who expanded it into a grand Gothic knight's residence. During the Ottoman wars, Csesznek served as a vital border fortress, changing hands several times before its final liberation in the late 17th century. The Esterházy family later converted it into a Baroque palace, but a catastrophic fire triggered by a lightning strike in 1810 rendered the structure uninhabitable. Today, the imposing ruins are a popular destination for hikers and history enthusiasts, featuring Hungary's first professional via ferrata routes and offering panoramic views of the Bakony wilderness.
