Hortobágy (Hungary)

Weather…

Hortobágy is the heart of the Hungarian Puszta, spanning over 800 square kilometers of untouched grassland. Since 1999, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage site, preserving a thousand-year-old cultural landscape of pastoralism. Its architectural landmark is the 167-meter-long Nine-holed Bridge, built between 1827 and 1833. The area remains a stronghold for traditional livestock breeding, featuring Grey cattle, Racka sheep, and Nonius horses roaming the endless horizon. A remarkable natural phenomenon is the autumn crane migration, when tens of thousands of birds rest in the park's wetlands. Visitors can explore the Hortobágy Wildlife Park or join safaris into the core zones of the steppe. The visitor center features interactive exhibits on flora and fauna, and since it is an International Dark Sky Park, it is a prime location for stargazing. Culinary highlights include Hortobágyi meat-filled crepes and slambuc, a hearty shepherd's dish made of potatoes and pasta. The area is easily accessible from Debrecen in about 40 minutes by car or train. Every August, the Bridge Fair attracts craftsmen and tourists from all over the country.
